The road-sign-birds point to the spiritual and physical connection of (rural and urban) spaces with their legged and winged inhabitants.
The Birdpeople are visiting different sites in Aotearoa as environmental beacons, drawing attention to the context they appear in by their presence and stimulating discourse. QR codes link them to video documentations of their journey on the Internet.
The title “ Conference of the Birds “ references the 1000 year old poem by Persian Poet Attar about a spiritual quest, where a group of birds set out on a journey to find their legendary leader, referred to as Simorgh. In the poem, each bird represents a fault of man. Many drop out of on this arduous journey. Some finally arrive at the place of prophecy, but instead of a king they find a lake, where they see their own reflection...
